Production powerhouse Ryan Murphy has taken to social media to share some good news: The Prom is coming soon to Netflix, COVID be damned.
Sharing a first-look photo of the stacked cast, which features Oscar winners Meryl Streep and Nicole Kidman, Kerry Washington, Andrew Rannels, Keegan-Michael Key and James Corden, Murphy lauded his “icon-packed” troupe for banding together in difficult times to complete the project.

“A group of true troopers who buckled up and finished shooting during COVID so we could give everybody an inspirational aspirational story that we all need right now,” he wrote, adding, “Christmas is right around the corner…”

The film is an adaptation of the 2018 Broadway show, and tells the story of four stage stars who help a high school lesbian take her girlfriend to the prom in a small, conservative town.

It’ll mark Murphy’s latest installment in his major deal with Netflix, following the success of The Politician and Hollywood.
His other Netflix projects, Ratched and an all-gay remake of The Boys in the Band, will also premiere soon.

Why couldn’t/didn’t he use the ORIGINAL CAST?
This is happening WAY too often.
Redmon17
Maybe because no one has ever heard of most of them??
Joshooeerr
Way too often? Give me one example of the original broadway cast appearing in the screen adaptation?!
cinemacapman
This is actually for Joshooeerr…Uh, the original 1970 movie of The Boys In The Band used the ENTIRE cast of all 9 actors from the Broadway play. Also, the movie of the musical Rent used all the original actors except for 2. I’m sure there’s others I’m forgetting, but those are two big ones.
@Andy…from what I read on IMDB awhile back, supposedly most of the cast from the revival of Boys In The Band last year is going to be in the remake. This article says “all-gay remake”…Uh, the play IS all-gay. I think the article meant that only gay actors will be in the remake.
As far as The Prom goes…well, it’s not unusual to use different actors, usually big name stars, in a movie adaption.

@Joshooeerr – I also forgot:
Come Back To The Five and Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean also used almost the entire Broadway cast except ofr one, maybe two people…otherwise, Cher, Kathy Bates, Sandy Dennis, were all in the original stage production.
The Ritz (1976) ALSO used the entire original cast from the Broadway play except for one actor, I think…Rita Moreno (who won a Tony Award for the stage show), Jack Weston, F. Murray Abraham, etc…were ALL in the original stage show.

The movie of “1776” also used nearly the entire original Broadway cast. But, as the examples above show, using the original cast *was* kind of a 70s thing.

@Joshooeerr Hedwig and the Angry Inch used the cast from the stage musical. Many cast members from Grease appeared in the film version. Though some changed roles. Barrymore both starred Christopher Plummer. Almost all the cast from Damn Yankees were in the movie. I think many actors from The Laramie Project appeared in the film version. I’m sure there are more besides the other ones mentioned here.

Looks good. This guy just keeps crankin.

wasn’t he supposed to have a Monica Lewinsky series out at this time? I remember people were pissed he’d bring her back in the news around election time and he was all ‘screw you’.
cinemacapman
American Crime Story season 3 is supposedly going to be about the Clinton/Lewinsky scandal…HOW that qualifies as a “crime story” is befuddling…but yes, it was about Lewinsky. Possibly the pandemic has put off plans for that one, as has a lot of Hollywood film and tv production.

Ryan Murphy IS “Miss” Peggy Lee!

PAINFULLY unfunny and too long. Why are these things so poorly written and how the hell is this getting funding to be on ANY service????
gothvixen
James Corden makes things unwatchable. He is such a loathsome conceited pr*ck.

so don’t watch it then. 🙂

Amazing cast. Looks interesting. Though I’m not sure “aspirational” is what he meant. Or he did and doesn’t know the meaning of the word. I’m not sure a telefilm is going to help anybody, except those getting paid to make it, achieve any sort of higher social status or material success.
