Singer Sam Smith is currently vacationing in an unknown location, but it’s clearly somewhere warm and sunny. The singer, 27, who came out last year as non-binary and genderqueer, posted a topless photo to their Instagram in which they indicated they finally felt comfortable in their own skin.
Smith has previously talked about their issues with body image and being unhappy with the way they looked. However, coming out as non-binary and embracing their queerness in art and image seems to be doing them a world of good.

How about we take this to the next level?
Our newsletter is like a refreshing cocktail (or mocktail) of LGBTQ+ entertainment and pop culture, served up with a side of eye-candy.
“Feels so good to have my top off on holiday. Spent all my life hiding my body from the sun. The last year my skin has been soaking in that LIGHT. Don’t let anyone or anything stop you from feeling that kiss from above you beautiful humans.”
The image has had over 1.1million likes and prompted many appreciative comments. Among those to comment was Golden Globe-winning actor Taron Egerton, who simply said, “You look gorgeous. X”
It’s not the only recent posting in which Smith has been unafraid to show off their body.

Smith has previously revealed undergoing liposuction at the age of 12 after a doctor told them they had an excess of estrogen, causing their breasts to enlarge. Finding worldwide fame at the age of 22 with the release of debut album, In The Lonely Hour, made Smith even more self-conscious and analytical of their looks.
However, going by postings over the last few months, they seem to be in a much more healthy place in regards to their appearance – and keen to spread that message to their followers.
Smith is currently working on their third studio album, expected to be released at some stage this year. They have said it will feature fewer ballads and more dance-oriented songs, following the success of their 2019 singles, “Dancing With A Stranger” and “How Do You Sleep”.

Everyone is absolutely entitled to their own definition of attractive. And should be allowed to be comfortable in their own skin….
To the haters who will be attempting to shame him remember the old adage. If you don’t have something nice to say, shut the fcuk up….

You obviously do not understand the concept of hypocrisy!

Good he’s overcoming his image issues. The over production of estrogen can certainly explain alot of his outer behaviors such as gender anomalies etc. That’s gotta be tough. More power to him.

Gynecomastia is not that uncommon and the procedure is fairly routine. A lot of guys who turn their fitness habits around undergo the surgery for aesthetic reasons, because they continue to have small visible breasts even after losing weight and gaining muscle.
rustyiam
Nothing wrong with accepting ones own body, but making ridiculous pandering statements like “ you look gorgeous “ is disingenuous and reinforces the notion of judging people in their looks! Native with more than 2 brain cells knows that Egerton would rather slit his own wrists than make out with that “ gorgeous” man!
Cam
Aww the account that always attacks LGBTs and supports bigoted Republicans doesn’t like that people complimented someone. (Eye Roll)

Queerty, can you decide what you celebrate here? Seems like 98% insta-gays with perfect bodies and then a smattering of “for God’s sake–love yourself the way you are”. Does that remotely represent the reality of our community?
Chrisk
The only time they’ll feature someone fat or older is if it’s a celebrity or they want a feel good message in between the vain twenty somethings with 0% body fat.
controversial2019
I think you’re coming off a little naive here.
The ‘Insta-Studs’ article that Queerty run each week is intended to promote ‘studs’.
Yes, those without 0% body fat can be / are attractive. Yes, people within the community are attracted to older and/or fuller figured individuals, but a ‘stud’ tends to be someone who the majority of people would deem to be attractive’. Not everyone will. But the majority. Whereas whilst fuller figured people are found to be attractive, I think one would struggle to reasonably argue that the MAJORITY find such figures to be attractive.
Jack
I’m truly just tired of this blog spending most of its time featuring clickbait “stud” pictures or stories, but then wants to seem so “woke” about 10% of the time. Just stay in your lane, guys. I just wonder if the Queerty staff are mostly 20 something circuit queens. I’m guessing…..yes.

I would recommend that if you’re ‘tired of it’, that you stop frequenting it.
But is it not the case that ‘serious’ newspapers and the like report on ‘serious’ moments but then…oh look…there’s a comic strip with the most ridiculous ‘humour’? Or a non-serious crossword puzzle where the theme is different types of cheeses?!
As a person within the community surely you of all people can realise that like people, websites dedicated to Queer things need not be ‘put in a box’ of serious or sexy. But can be both.

Look, a large majority of us would love it if we could afford that hot sports or luxury car. But, usually we settle for what’s affordable and grow to love it. Truth is, that sports car is awesome until the problems start. Then we find out how much it cost to fix. God, why did I buy this car. What was I thinking. Sorry, I have issues.

So frustrating reading an article peppered with they and their in place of him and his but amusing that as soon as you get to the comments section it is all he and him.

Sam is wildly talented and super successful. I wish that were enough for them. It’s depressing that a multi million selling Grammy & Oscar winner feels the need to strip off and be ‘body positive’. When clearly were they truly positive about themselves they wouldn’t need to share it with the world to gain such (empty) affirmation. But that’s 99% of people on social media now. That’s how screwed up we are as a society.

A flabby man took off his shirt at the beach. Stop the presses, someone did something that men have been doing since beaches were discovered. Has he seriously never been to the beach before and seen the people?
Maybe he should worry less about body positivity and more about his desperate need for validation for doing the most mundane things in life. You don’t need a gold star just for getting out of bed.
Bob LaBlah
You go, Sam. I love a man who enjoys a bowl of butter pecan ice cream and a piece of sweet potato pie to go with it. They tend to have more to grab onto back there. lol
Prax07
Of course a fat guy is going to post about body “positivity”. It’s how fat people try talking themselves into feeling good about their flab. Sam’s not going to post about how he can’t see his dick because his fat belly gets in the way, so he post this crap instead.

Good for Sam Smith. Not everyone can be that super gym body guy with chiseled abs. I think he looks just great regardless. This is what I feel is the great flaw in the gay community that somehow unless you live and breathe the gym, have a flawless body, and of course, the endowment to behold, that your somehow are out of place. I don’t subscribe to that and apparently neither does Sam Smith, good for him!!!
Vartan X.
Why does so-called ‘body positivity’ always involve changeable traits (like being overweight). What about people who are very short or facially ugly?? You can’t change these. Where is body positivity for them?
batesmotel
I think that’s fantastic that he’s comfortable with his body now, but…yeah here comes the but. The only reason he has over 1 million likes is because it’s Sam Smith who has records out. If he didn’t and was just another regular unknown person, then he’d only have a few likes. And sadly he is the kind of guy that gays won’t talk to in general if he were on an app like Grindr or Tinder, so it doesn’t change anything. Gays are some of the most superficial shaming bunch. They like airbrushed abs and muscles in order to engage.
Josh447
And then again, the whole they/them thing he pushes is pure bunk. Will call you as I see you, mister.
